Kindle 3 – Is it worth it, or a waste of time?

The announcement of the Kindle 3 is now official, and no doubt new orders for the eReader is piling up by the thousands. For those who do not know what the Kindle is, simply put, it is an electronic book from Amazon, which is the height of a large novel, and as thin as half a pencil. Is all the excitement for the Kindle 3 merited or is it just the same old device in a new graphite case? Let’s look at the Kindle 3 coming to the table and what Amazon decided to remove. However, we need to put emphasis on the eReader market and what Amazon is trying to achieve with the Kindle

Yes Amazon – it’s a jungle out there

It is not surprising to say that Amazon is facing a very different world compared to when the first Kindle arrived on the market.
The competition for the eReader market is getting crowded in both the budget end and the high-end part. In addition, it has been much talk about “Kindle-killers” who are looking to dethrone the king Kindle eReader number one. The eReader Kobo was released earlier this year, with a price tag far less than the Kindle
at $ 149, and it will be news to no one that Apple launched their attack into the eReader market with media-rich iPad.

As the market though, Amazon is faced with a strange situation where the implicit claims are misleading consumers regarding clear requirements. Otherwise, there are unspoken implicit requirements, Amazon readers want an easy to use device that does not distract from the reading experience. Something very “book-like.” On the other hand, there are clear requirements prompted by a new state-of-the-art technology with multi-media functionality, with touch screen technology, video viewing, etc. ..

How has Amazon responded to these challenges? First, they were not tempted to create an eReader that makes up and distract from the main task, ie reading. Kindle 3 has retained its simple interface and is still very “book-like”. Second, Amazon has budget eReaders entering the market by launching two versions of Kindle
3rd.

Examples: A 3G WiFi ($ 189), a Kindle with WiFi ($ 139) with the first having the  price tag of the Kindle 2, while adding lots of new functionality.

Kindle Wi-Fi cuts under a large majority of other eReaders on the market, while delivering a mature product that is backed up on Amazon book store with millions of titles to choose from.

Given the circumstances in which Amazon believe themselves, let’s look at what features they put in Kindle3 and what they decided to go left out.

Kindle 3 – what they put in.

Amazon focused on improving the basic functionality of the Kindle , by letting the Kindle do what it does best reading.

Amazon has improved the readability of the device, all standards were already very good. They claim 50% better contrast than any other eReader, improved readability under bright sunlight, and some new better font to read your books.

The physical device itself has also been added. The size of the Kindle has been reduced while keeping the same size for the reading area. The battery life has not been neglected. Simple charge can last up to a month.

The capacity for the Kindle 3 is now 3500 books available for download in under 60 seconds.

Wi-Fi has added 3G as a way to connect to the Kindle so you can browse the Amazon bookstore and clean new web browser-based kit.

Kindle 3 – what they left out

After the release of Apple iPad expectations for the Kindle was sky-high. In a nut shell, people would want a Amazon iPad. Now that some time has passed, the iPad is a little less attractive as a tool for reading books. People are realizing that it is too heavy to hold for hours, and the LCD screen is easy on the eyes over time.

A lot of people predicted color screens for the Kindle 3rd. There was much sense in this, as there are now lots of eReaders coming to the market with color. A non-color device next to a color device looks quite dull in comparison. However, to hide the color is not as easy as first thought. This would include leaving the E-Ink technology behind that is responsible for the “book-like” text on the Kindle screen. A possibility is that particular technology could radically improve the integration of color into the screen, but Amazon and R & D teams are not there yet. Another option is to use LCD technology found in the iPad, which in eye-strain over a long time to read and the inability to read in direct sunlight.

Touch screen technology was another rumor that the traffic for the Kindle 3rd It seems logical that readers can flick through the pages of the eBook for the device hit the screen. Earlier this year Amazon was Touchco, a New York start it, which specializes in. .. Yes you guessed right … touch screen technology. It appears that Amazon is moving in this direction, or at least investigate the possibilities to include this type of interface in the future.

Finally, another noticeable shortage of innovation. Amazon was 100% correct to focus on the core features of the Kindle
However, it could have added at least one new innovation to the device. The eReader is no longer a side-show, there is a central part of the Amazon strategy and sales volume. Ebook sales have passed hard-cover sales and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, recently predicted that eBook sales will dominate over paperbacks in the next 12 months. Given the importance of this market and capital to develop these products, it is not unreasonable to expect the unexpected. A possible example of innovation might be to develop a social networking functionality for the Kindle

Kindle has an integrated network of Facebook and Twitter, although it is much more room within the social network for people who are passionate about the author or subject, and want to share their thoughts about what they read. Another example could be location based services, where content is delivered to your Kindle depending on where you are in the world. These are just some examples that may not even be practical for “real” diagnosis has been made, but they do show that the Kindle could think of a new graphite colored box, and get more creative.

Kindle 4?

Kindle 3 has been improved in the mature product, in response to the growing market challenges and growing consumer demands. Although Kindle 3 will not have expectations, it still gives a better reading experience that will not disappoint. Jeff Bezos announced recently that the Kindle is a long time and that he expects that there will be a lot more generations of the Kindle before. Let’s hope that the Kindle
4 will make it a little more than a third Kindle
